Virginia residents can now add their state-issued driver's license to the Apple Wallet app on iPhone and Apple Watch.
Virginia residents can now use a digital version of their state-issued driver's license or identification card on their iPhone or Apple Watch. The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles announced the launch on Wednesday, marking Virginia as the 15th state to adopt the Apple Wallet ID feature. Users can present their digital ID at more than 250 TSA checkpoints across the country, as well as at select businesses and entertainment venues in the commonwealth. The technology allows users to verify their identity by tapping their device on a reader, releasing only the requested information after authorization via Face ID or Touch ID. Secretary of Transportation Nick Donohue highlighted the launch as a secure and seamless way to share identity information while addressing privacy concerns. However, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles noted that residents must still carry a physical ID as a backup, particularly for traffic stops, as law enforcement does not yet universally accept the digital version.
