Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican secretary for relations with states and international organizations, stated that the conflict in Ukraine cannot be resolved by military means alone. During a meeting in Moscow with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Gallagher reaffirmed the Holy See's position that a political and diplomatic process is essential to end the hostilities. Gallagher noted that it is urgent to end the war to avoid remaining prisoners of past wrongs. He emphasized that concrete results in the humanitarian sphere are necessary to alleviate suffering and restore trust between the parties. Lavrov expressed appreciation for the voter's openness to dialogue and agreed on the need for increased cooperation on humanitarian issues. Gallagher is scheduled to return to the Vatican on August 28.
