Shanksville Residents and Officials Honor Flight 93 Heroes on 25th Anniversary of September 11 Attacks
Shanksville, Pennsylvania, is hosting ceremonies to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The Flight 93 National Memorial will hold a morning observance at 8:30 a.m. to honor the 40 passengers and crew members who were killed after disrupting the hijackers' plans to fly the plane into the U.S. Capitol. At the Wall of Names, officials will read the names of the victims and the Bells of Remembrance will ring. A second ceremony at 1 p.m. will feature keynote speakers, including Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who will pay tribute to the lives lost. The Wall of Names will open to the public at 3 p.m., and the visitors center will remain open until 7 p.m. Local residents and first responders, including fire chief Terry Shaffer, reflect on how the crash transformed the small community. Shaffer noted that the town's legacy is now inextricably linked to the flight. Fire chief Chris Meyer and fire department president Brad Shober also highlighted the community's role in supporting victims' families and preserving the memory of the 40 heroes who sacrificed their lives.
