Javier Milei threatens UK with oil sanctions as Argentina seeks to strengthen claim over Falkland Islands

The sanctions target the Sea Lion oilfield, where the British company Rockhopper Exploration and the Israeli company Navitas Petroleum are scheduled to begin exploration within two years. Milei stated that the UK is acting in violation of a UN resolution urging both nations to avoid unilateral action while the sovereignty dispute remains unresolved. During a national address, Javier Milei cited signs that the US might reconsider its historic position of neutrality regarding the islands. He noted that the President of the United States, Donald Trump, is currently reviewing the US position on the territory. Milei described the UK as a nation in decline, while asserting that Argentina's future is flourishing. The UK responded by reaffirming its commitment to the islands, stating that the islanders' right of self-determination is paramount. Downing Street noted that the right to exploit natural resources belongs to the right of the islanders. In a 2013 referendum, 99.8% of the residents voted to remain a British overseas territory.
