Hanwha Defense USA Wins Major U.S. Army Contract to Deliver K9 Mobile Howitzer Prototypes

The U.S. Army has awarded Hanwha Defense USA a contract to deliver K9 Mobile Howitzer prototypes for the new Mobile Tactical Cannon (MTC) program. The agreement, which could reach a total cumulative face value of $262,903,274, provides for the accelerated delivery of six prototype systems with an option for an additional 12. These platforms will undergo operational experiments to assess performance, reliability, and supportability in realistic combat conditions. Hanwha Defense USA, a subsidiary of South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace, is establishing a Phase I site in Opelika, Alabama, to serve as a U.S. integration and test facility. This award marks the company's first major contract with the U.S. Army. The K9MH design is intended to replace the Army's existing towed M777 howitzers in select formations, offering greater mobility and lethality. The administration announced that the selection of Hanwha Defense USA was made through a competitive process, choosing the wheeled platform over several other international and domestic competitors. The Army's decision reflects a shift toward more mobile and adaptable fires formations to meet the demands of modern, large-scale combat operations.
