A judge in Mexico City has officially reclassified the murder of Paola Buenrostro as a femicide, linking Arturo N to the trial. The victim, a 25-year-old sex worker, was killed by gunshot wounds on September 30, 2016, after approaching the vehicle of Arturo N, who had hired her services. At the time, Arturo N was found with a firearm in his hand while Buenrostro was unconscious in the passenger seat. The reclassification follows a long period of deliberation and pressure from transgender activists. The Mexico City Attorney General's Office initially classified the crime as a homicide, but the Public Ministry requested a change to aggravated femicide. The judge ordered Arturo N to remain in preventive prison while a three-month deadline was set for the completion of a supplementary investigation. Kenya Cuevas, an activist and friend of the victim, led the campaign for justice. The Mexico City Attorney General's Office previously issued a public apology for the initial investigation's deficiencies and offered a reward for information regarding Arturo N's location. The case contributed to the Mexico Bell City Penal Code in 2024, which now includes transfeminicide as a recognized crime.
