AstraZeneca Discontinues eVOLVE-Lung02 Phase III Trial for Metastatic Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

AstraZeneca is discontinuing the eVOLVE-Lung02 Phase III trial, which evaluated the effectiveness of volrustomig in combination with chemotherapy as a first-line therapy for patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer. The decision follows a recommendation from the Independent Data Monitoring Committee, which concluded that the volrustomig combination was unlikely to meet the primary endpoints of progression-free survival and overall survival in patients with PD-L1 negative tumours. Susan Galbraith, Executive Vice President of Oncology Haematology R&D at AstraZeneca, stated that while the company is disappointed with the results, they will learn from the trial and continue to develop medicines from their industry-leading pipeline. The safety profile of the volrustomig combination remained consistent with known profiles for the individual medicines. AstraZeneca will continue to work with investigators to ensure continuity of care for patients currently on the trial. Other Phase III volrustomig trials for cervical cancer, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, and mesothelioma are proceeding as planned.
