Everything Sprouts Recalls Alfalfa Sprouts Following Nationwide Food-Poisoning Outbreak Affecting 15 States

Everything Sprouts has issued a voluntary recall of alfalfa sprouts sold under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands following a nationwide food-poisoning outbreak. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported at least 55 cases of illness across 15 states, involving multiple strains of E. coli and salmonella. Most of the illnesses were concentrated in Minnesota and Wisconsin, where the company is based. Food safety attorney Bill Marler noted that the company bears responsibility for the outbreak, pointing out that the FDA had identified serious violations at the facility, including a leaking roof and dirty surfaces, less than two years before the outbreak began. While Everything Sprouts stated that daily tests have yielded no positive results since the outbreak started, the FDA and CDC continue to investigate the source of the infections. Consumers are advised to throw away or return any affected products and wash surfaces that may have come into contact with the sprouts.
