Federico Gutiérrez announces the return of scheduled water cuts in Medellin due to insufficient savings
Medellin authorities announced the return of scheduled water rationing in the city's northeast and eastern central sectors starting Tuesday, September 8. The decision follows a voluntary savings plan launched by the city council and Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM) that failed to meet expected targets. While residents were asked to reduce consumption, the total savings achieved were not enough to avoid new restrictions. Federico Gutiérrez explained that the new rationing schedule involves eight-hour interruptions between 8:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. on an alternating daily basis. These cuts are designed to ensure residents have water service before leaving for the day and before arriving home. The measure focuses on high-rise sectors in the Popular, Manrique, Aranjuez, Villa Hermosa, Buenos Aires, and La Candelaria communes, which are primarily supplied by the Piedras Blancas dam. Federico Gutiérrez noted that if daily savings goals of 92 liters per house in the eastern zone and 70 liters per day in the rest of the metropolitan area are not met, more comprehensive rationing may be implemented in other zones of the city.
