San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department kills 78-year-old Paul Ronald Selby after hours-long standoff in Mentone

San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department deputies killed 78-year-old Paul Ronald Selby on Friday after he allegedly opened fire on a Southern California Edison crew and barricaded himself in his home. The incident began around 10:50 a.m. in the 300 block of King Street in Mentone, where Paul Ronald Selby fired multiple rounds at employees from Southern California Edison, ACE Tree Enterprises, and Evergreen Traffic Control who were trimming trees. Deputies from the Specialized Enforcement Division responded to the scene and attempted to communicate with Paul Ronald Selby for several hours. After he refused to surrender peacefully, a brief firefight occurred around 2 p.m. Paul Ronald Selby was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were injured during the exchange. Authorities closed roads for several hours during the standoff. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
