Bedrock Robotics deploys autonomous excavators on major infrastructure projects to address construction worker shortages

Bedrock Robotics has deployed excavators equipped with its AI system to operate fully autonomously on several major infrastructure projects. The company announced that these machines are currently performing autonomous excavation at three specific sites: a Nevada water treatment facility in partnership with Sundt Construction, a multi-million cubic yard earthwork site with Champion Site Prep in Texas, and a 1.2 million cubic yard civil sitework project with Zachry Construction Corporation. These autonomous excavators are designed as a retrofit for existing heavy equipment, allowing crews to install the sensor and computing package in a single day without making permanent changes to the machinery. The system was trained on tens of thousands of hours of field work, enabling the machines to perceive their environments and execute complex tasks once a site manager sets the initial plan. Bedrock Robotics stated that the technology aims to help contractors manage worker shortages and improve efficiency. The company noted that the machines can operate alongside other equipment without operational barriers, automatically stopping if a person or unauthorized object gets too close. Bedrock Robotics does not expect the technology to replace operators entirely, but rather see it handling repetitive production work while skilled operators move into supervisory roles.
