President Claudia Sheinbaum proposed a constitutional reform to modify three articles of the Constitution to prevent individuals with dual nationality from competing for the presidency, a governorship, or the head of government of Mexico City. Under the proposal, candidates would be required to renounce their second nationality before submitting their registration for electoral contention. The reform requires a two-thirds majority in both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. Currently, the officialist bloc lacks the sufficient votes to pass the measure. The Party Green Ecological of Mexico (PVEM) has expressed differences over the proposal, as several of its members hold dual nationality. Manuel Velasco, the coordinator for the Green in the Senate, stated that his bloc has not reached a consensus, noting that at least a dozen of its members hold two passports. The reform is currently being advanced through the committees.
