Andris Kulbergs Reassures Latvian Public That Risk of Direct Russian Military Invasion Remains Low

Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs stated on Thursday that the country's military threat level remains unchanged and the risk of a direct Russian military invasion is currently low. The statement was made to address public concern following a draft government order proposing a temporary state of emergency for the eastern border region's healthcare, energy, and water sectors. While the proposal cited the threat of escalating Russian military actions, Kulbergs clarified that the technical and organizational preparedness measures should not be interpreted as if Latvia were on the brink of war. The ministry subsequently withdrew the draft for revision to correct inaccurate interpretations of its purpose. The Prime Minister emphasized that while Latvia must remain prepared for hybrid threats such as cyberattacks, sabotage, and drone incidents, the current security assessment does not necessitate an immediate alarm. He urged government officials to communicate security measures more clearly to avoid confusion regarding the nation's actual defense status.
