Iran Receives Invitation to Join the Mecca Agreement for Mutual Defense

Iran has been invited to join the Mecca Agreement for Mutual Defense, a new security alliance established by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan. The administration announced that the agreement establishes a principle of mutual defense, where an attack on any one of the three member countries would be considered an attack on all of them. Mehdi Rahimi, head of the Iranian parliament's Khaneh Mellat news agency, stated that the invitation is currently under review. While not yet officially confirmed by the foreign ministries of the involved nations, the move is seen as a potential victory for Iran, which has long sought a regional security umbrella. If confirmed, Iranian membership would significantly alter the alliance, transforming it from a group of three countries with close security ties to the West into a broader regional framework. The agreement was signed on August 7 by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The administration noted that the alliance could expand to include additional countries, with Egypt being a public candidate for membership.
