The BBC has requested a U.S. District Court in Florida to authorize subpoenas for Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump, and Jared Kushner as part of a $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the broadcaster. The network is seeking testimony and documentation regarding the way a 2024 documentary edited a speech delivered by President Trump on January 6, 2021. The BBC argues that the three family members are material witnesses who possess personal knowledge of the president's actions and the speech's preparation in the Oval Office. President Trump's legal team has accused the BBC of attempting to harass his family and supporters by abusing the deposition process to distract from its own liability. While the BBC apologized for the edit, which gave the impression that President Trump called for violence, the broadcaster maintains the edit does not constitute defamation. The court has granted President Trump's lawyers until Friday to respond to the request. A trial is provisionally set for February in Miami.
