Belgian prosecutors detained a Chinese-Belgian national for alleged espionage involving semiconductor technology and trade secrets.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office announced that the investigation involves charges of espionage, participation in a criminal organization, misuse of company assets, and unlawful disclosure of trade secrets regarding the Belgian semiconductor company BELGAN BV. The suspect held a senior research position at BELGAN while also serving as a director of a Chinese company with similar manufacturing activities. The investigation suggests the unlawful transfer of specialized intellectual property and trade secrets related to the production of gallium nitride chips. These chips are used in electric vehicles, aerospace, and military applications. The company BELGAN BV went bankrupt in 2024, leaving 400 employees without jobs. The company was partially acquired by Hong Kong-based Chinese investors who established a similarly focused company in China called GaNkool. The detained man denies the charges against him. Prosecutors confirmed that a second suspect is being sought in the case.
