Novelist and poet Wendell Berry died at age 92 in Kentucky

Novelist and poet Wendell Berry died at his home in Port Royal, Kentucky, at age 92. Berry spent his life farming his land in Henry County, Kentucky, which his family had farmed for seven generations. Berry began his career as an academic, studying at the University of Kentucky and Stanford before becoming an English professor at New York University at age 28. He eventually left the New York literary world to return to his home county in Kentucky. His writing served as a primary inspiration for his work as an environmentalist and a critic of industrialized farming. Berry was known for his commitment to a simple life, often avoiding modern technology. He never owned a computer and used a typewriter purchased in 1956. He was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Obama in 2012 and became the first living author inducted into the Kentucky writer's Hall of Fame in 2015.
