Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace members reject Boeing contract offer and authorize potential strike

Members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) rejected Boeing's proposed collective bargaining agreements for its professional and technical units on Friday. The union, which represents 17,000 aerospace professionals, voted down the contracts despite a unanimous endorsement from the union's negotiation team. SPEEA negotiators noted that while the offer included a 29.4% wage-pool increase over four years, many members expressed deep mistrust of Boeing management due to past quality and safety issues. The Professional Unit rejected the offer with a 64.3% no vote, while the Technical Unit rejected it with a71.9% no vote. Both units also approved strike authorization with high margins, setting the stage for a potential work stoppage starting as early as October 7. Boeing expressed disappointment with the results and is now implementing a strike contingency plan. Aviation experts suggested that while a strike is possible, it may be avoided if negotiations continue to address the membership's concerns regarding the company's leadership and historical errors.
