Rafael Mariano Grossi brokers localized ceasefire to restore external power to Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) brokered a localized ceasefire to allow Ukrainian technicians to repair the 330-kilovolt Ferosplavna-1 power line north of the Dnipro River. This repair work is necessary to restore off-site power to the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating on emergency diesel generators since August 20. This marks the 27th time the plant has lost connection to the Ukrainian power system since the start of the full-scale invasion. Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi stated that the ceasefire is a critical step for nuclear safety and security, as diesel fuel supplies are under increasing strain. While the plant remains in a cold shutdown mode, the prolonged use of backup generators increases the risk of equipment failure and startup automation failure. Energoatom reported that the current situation represents a systemic violation of nuclear safety principles. The company stated that the only way to ensure complete safety is the withdrawal of all Russian military and civilian personnel from the area and the restoration of the main power lines.
