Nayshawn Wilkinson faces new attempted-murder charges after shooting a 24-year-old man during the West Indian Day Parade

Nayshawn Wilkinson, a 19-year-old man, was arrested and charged with attempted murder and other charges following a shooting during the West Indian Day Parade in Brooklyn. Wilkinson was already out on bail for a previous attempted-murder charge when he was arrested for the new incident. During the parade, a 24-year-old man was shot in the butt near the corner of St. John's Place and Nostrand Avenue. Wilkinson was taken into custody and a firearm was recovered. Earlier in the day, a series of stabbings occurred during the J'Ouvert celebrations. Around 5:45 a.m., four people were stabbed or slashed in a brawl at Carroll Street and Utica Avenue. A 32-year-old man was left in critical condition, while the others were listed in stable condition. The NYPD implemented enhanced security measures this year, including ending the parade 30 minutes earlier than usual to curb violence. Despite these measures, three people were injured in separate shootings near the parade route in the afternoon. A 37-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man were both shot in the leg near Eastern Parkway and Kingston Avenue.
