Volodymyr Zelenskyy Warns Global Aviation Industry of Unsafe Russian Airspace Due to Ukrainian Drone Activity
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a warning to the global aviation industry that Russian airspace is becoming unsafe for commercial flights. The warning follows an expansion of Ukrainian drone operations, which have caused frequent temporary airport closures and flight delays. While Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine does not intend to directly target civilian aircraft, the sheer volume of drones crossing the border requires the aviation industry to take into account. Ukraine has formally requested that the International Civil Aviation Organization encourage member states to stop using Russian airspace. Russia has rejected this warning, maintaining that its transport authorities are capable of protecting civilian flights and that commercial operations are continuing normally. Some airlines have already begun to adjust their schedules. Air Tanzania has suspended its routes to Russia, and Pegasus has paused operations for technical and operational reasons. Other carriers, such as Flydubai, continue to monitor the situation to assess operational requirements. These adjustments may impact international travel, as some airlines have already increased flight durations to avoid Russian territory.
