Dr. Alla Barry, a biology professor at Missouri Southern State University, died after being struck by a boat while swimming in Beaver Lake on Friday night. The accident occurred in the White River arm of the lake, north of War Eagle Marina. According to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, the area is a relatively narrow channel that typically experiences heavy boat traffic. The incident is currently under investigation, and the commission has not yet released information regarding the driver of the boat. Brad Wiegmann, a local resident, observed the activity near his dock and noted that the incident had already occurred when he arrived. Wiegmann stated that they noticed a change in the number of people in the water and assumed the person had been struck by a boat. Missouri Southern State University offered counseling to students and faculty in memory of the Barry.
