The Federal Protection of the Environment Agency (Profepa) filed a formal complaint with the General Public Prosecutor's Office (FGR) following the seizure of 1.2 liters of mercury in a vehicle on the Puerto de los Velázquez-San Gaspar highway. The discovery occurred in the municipality of Pinal de Amoles, a key production hub within the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve. Authorities are investigating the conduct as a potential environmental crime under Article 414 of the Federal Penal Code, which penalizes hazardous activities that damage natural resources. Mexico is the second-largest global producer of mercury, with the Sierra Gorda region producing approximately 101 tons annually. The metal is primarily used in artisanal gold mining across South America, with significant amounts trafficked to Bolivia, Colombia, and Peru. Investigations suggest that organized crime, including the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, controls many of these mines. The seizure highlights the need for inter-institutional coordination to combat illegal trafficking and ensure proper environmental management of this toxic substance.
