The 29-year-old, accused of sparking the blaze that became the Palisades Fire, now faces two counts of arson instead of the original three. The new indictment focuses on the Lachman Fire, which began on January 1, 2025, and eventually grew into the most destructive fire in Los Angeles history. Defense attorney Steve Haney maintains that Jonathan Rinderknecht is innocent, arguing that there is no direct evidence linking him to the Lachman Fire. He contends that the fires were separate events and that the Jonathan Rinderknecht could have arrived at the scene after the fire started. Conversely, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli stated that the evidence is strong and the government intends to obtain a guilty verdict in the retrial.
