GKN Aerospace Agrees to $100 Million Claims Program for Garden Grove Residents Following Chemical Tank Scare

GKN Aerospace has agreed to establish a claims program worth up to $100 million to compensate over 50,000 residents of Garden Grove and surrounding cities who were forced to evacuate during a chemical tank emergency in May. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office announced the agreement, which follows a criminal investigation that ultimately did not lead to actual charges. The program will reimburse eligible residents and businesses for expenses such as hotel stays, meals, transportation, and lost wages through 2027. During the incident, a tank containing methyl methacrylate suffered a thermal issue, threatening a potential explosion. Authorities declared a state of emergency, and residents were evacuated for five days, including Memorial Day weekend. GKN Aerospace officials stated that the facility, which produces components for military aircraft, will resume manufacturing operations on September 28, contingent on meeting safety standards. While the claims program addresses immediate costs, the company may still face separate civil claims and reimbursement demands from emergency services agencies.
