University of Cambridge Launches Independent Review into Support Provided to Late Professor Jason Arday

The University of Cambridge has launched an independent review to evaluate its decision-making and actions regarding the late Jason Arday, who died at his home in London on August 14. Arday, the university's youngest black professor, resigned from his position as professor of sociology of education just nine days before his death following allegations of plagiarism and questions regarding his career achievements. While Arday denied the claims, he admitted to making errors in his work, which he attributed to his autism. Vice-Chancellor Prof Deborah Prentice announced the review will be conducted in two parts. The first part, led by Nazir Afzal, will examine the support, interventions, and protections available to Arday in the period immediately preceding his death. Afzal, a former chief crown prosecutor, stated he intends to ask difficult questions regarding whether the university could have done more to support the scholar. The second part of the review will examine the wider context of Arday's time at the university, including recruitment processes, mentoring, and the university's response to research misconduct. The first part of the review is expected to report within three months, while the second part will conclude within six months of the establishment of an expert panel.
