Tiff Macklem unveils new vertical $20 banknote featuring King Charles III

The Bank of Canada revealed a new $20 banknote featuring a portrait of King Charles III on Thursday. This marks the first time a new monarch has appeared on a Canadian banknote in over 70 years, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The new bill is oriented vertically and features a floral and leafy tapestry inspired by the King's commitment to the environment, alongside provincial and territorial floral emblems and culturally significant plants for Indigenous Peoples. Governor of the Bank of Canada Tiff Macklem stated that the note is visually stunning and more secure than ever, highlighting new security technologies like a purple stripe that spins and transforms when moved. The back of the note depicts the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France, honoring the service and sacrifice of Canadian troops during World War I. The new banknote will enter circulation in late February 2027. The design was developed in collaboration with various partners, including an Indigenous Advisory Circle and Veterans Affairs Canada. This bill follows the $10 note featuring Viola Desmond, which was the first vertical banknote in the series.
