Ottawa City Council votes to rename Trump Avenue as the administration orders Lake Ontario to be called Lake America
The Ottawa City Council has taken the first step toward renaming Trump Avenue, a residential street in the Central Park neighborhood that has been named after President Trump for approximately 25 years. The move follows a period of escalating trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada, as the administration announced the renaming of Lake Ontario as "Lake America." Councillor Tim Tierney and Councillor Riley Brockington expressed that the current name is an embarrassment due to the president's repeated jabs at Canada. Proposed replacements include "Taco Avenue," a reference to the acronym "Trump Always Chickens Out," and other options like "Obama Avenue" and "Pelosi Avenue." While the street was directly named after Donald Trump for marketing reasons in the 1990s, the council notes that a name change will not happen overnight. More than half of the residents must support the change before it can proceed. The council aims to focus on trade and tariffs rather than the "lame name game" of onomastic revision.
