The Tugberk Imamoglu, a cargo ship carrying rolled steel, sank in 11 minutes after colliding with the oil tanker Alsu in the Sea of Marmara. The collision occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m. about 20 miles south of Silivri, a suburb of Istanbul. All 10 crew members of the Tugberk Imamoglu remain missing, and no survivors have been found yet. Authorities have identified the wreck at a depth of 900 meters. The Turkish Navy's TCG Akın vessel used an ROV to confirm the wreck's identity. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with 18 vessels assigned to the area. Prosecutors in Silivri have charged the captain and the third officer of the Alsu with negligent homicide and failure to fulfill navigational safety obligations. The investigation suggests the captain of the Alsu was asleep while the inexperienced third officer was on watch without a lookout. The Tugberk Imamoglu captain had reportedly warned the Alsu to steer to port before the collision occurred.
