Dan Driscoll submits resignation as Army Secretary after Pete Hegseth reshapes senior military leadership

The administration announced that Adam Telle will serve as acting secretary of the Army immediately following the resignation of Dan Driscoll. Driscoll submitted his resignation after 18 months in the role, reportedly raising concerns that Secretary of War Pete Hegseth was hindering Army modernization by removing the generals responsible for the work. Secretary Hegseth has overseen a rapid restructuring of the Pentagon, which includes firing or blocking the promotions of more than 80 general and flag officers. This turnover has drawn criticism from both sides of the aisle. Republican Senator Thom Tillis accused Hegseth of creating a leadership void, while Democratic Senator Jack Reed argued that the secretary has removed dozens of senior officers without explanation. The administration maintains that the restructuring is a deliberate policy to streamline the military and return to a merit-based system. Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated that the department is unified behind Hegseth’s vision of 'Peace Through Strength.' While some critics point to the disproportionate removal of women and Black officers, Hegseth has stated that his primary metric for leadership is merit rather than identity.
