An Amazon cargo plane overshot the runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, striking a van and killing five people. The Boeing 767, operated by 21 Air, barreled approximately 1,300 feet past the end of the runway before crashing into a van used to shuttle plane-cleaning crews. The five deceased individuals were identified as Rolando Aleman Leon, Yoel Rodriguez Naranjo, Julio C. Pineda, Javierkys Reyes Quevedo, and Carlos Acosta Fajardo. National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy stated that the aircraft appeared to attempt a brief go-around before abandoning the maneuver and failing to stop. Flight data suggests the plane landed on its nose and right landing gear first, indicating an unstable approach. Investigators are currently reviewing cockpit recordings and interviewing pilots to determine the cause of the crash. The crash occurred during a flight from Puerto Rico under stormy weather conditions. Experts noted that a strong tailwind and high approach speed may have contributed to the plane overrunning the runway. Because Miami International Airport lacks an Engineered Material Arresting System, the jet traveled through a perimeter fence and onto a city street, striking an SUV as well. The airport is currently operating with two of its four runways closed for investigation.
