Turkish cargo ship Tugberk Imamoglu sinks after colliding with tanker Alsu in the Marmara Sea

The Tugberk Imamoglu, a 90-meter Turkish cargo ship, sank rapidly after colliding with the tanker Alsu in the Marmara Sea near Istanbul. The collision occurred at approximately 3 a.m. local time, roughly 18 to 20 miles south of Silivri. All 10 crew members aboard the Tugberk Imamoglu were Turkish nationals, and no survivors have been found yet. Authorities reported that the Tugberk Imamoglu was carrying 4,200 tons of rolled steel from Iskenderun to Eregli. The Alsu, which was traveling empty from Kocaeli to Aliaga, suffered no significant damage from the impact. Search and rescue operations involving multiple helicopters, drones, and maritime units are ongoing. Initial investigations by the Silivri Public Prosecutor’s Office identified serious negligence on the bridge of the Alsu. The tanker's captain was sleeping in his cabin during the collision, and an inexperienced officer was at the helm with no lookout on duty. Additionally, the Tugberk Imamoglu's automatic identification system was found to be non-functional, causing the vessel to navigate like a 'ghost vessel' for other traffic.
