Sim Ann confirms arrest of 52 Singapore citizens in China for suspected pyramid scheme activities

The administration announced that 52 Singapore citizens were arrested in China's Guangxi region for suspected involvement in pyramid scheme activities. This marks what is likely the largest foreign detention of Singapore citizens on record. Sim Ann, Singapore’s second minister for foreign affairs, stated that the Singapore Embassy in Beijing and the consulate in Guangzhou have visited the detainees to provide consular support and check on their well-being. Sim Ann noted that while Singapore does not intervene in other countries' judicial processes, due process should be accorded to the citizens. The arrests occur during a broader push by Chinese authorities to curb illicit financial schemes. Many of the detainees are linked to the long-running "1040 Sunshine" project, a pyramid scheme where participants pay an upfront fee with the promise of high returns. Authorities in both Singapore and China have banned pyramid selling, as these schemes are funded solely by recruitment fees rather than legitimate sales. The Singapore Police Force urged the public to exercise caution when investing overseas, noting that recovering funds from fraudulent operators can be difficult.
