China Completes First Phase of Construction on Antelope Reef to Establish Potential Military Base

China has completed the first phase of construction on Antelope Reef in the Paracel Islands, creating an artificial island that analysts suggest will form part of the nation's largest military base in the South China Sea. Satellite imagery reveals that the reclaimed landmass, which measures 1,458 acres, features a 680-meter wharf and a helicopter pad. Significant infrastructure development is underway, including the initial excavation for a new runway and the foundation for large hangars. While the Chinese Ministry of National Defense did not immediately respond to a request for comment, state media has characterized the construction as a peaceful and constructive effort to serve civilian needs such as weather forecasting and scientific research.
