China Deploys Record Number of Government Vessels to Taiwan Waters to Assert Maritime Jurisdiction

China has significantly increased its maritime presence around Taiwan, deploying a record number of government vessels in July. According to data from Taiwan's coast guard, 244 Chinese government ships—including coast guard, scientific research, and other official vessels—were detected in the waters surrounding the main island. This figure represents a marked increase from the 55 ships detected in June and 30 in May, as Beijing seeks to assert authority over the region's waters and map the and region for submarine warfare. Analysts suggest these actions are part of a 'gray-zone' strategy, where China exerts pressure without resorting to full-scale war. By increasing the number of research vessels and coast guard ships, Beijing is testing the willingness of foreign vessels to comply with its authority and preparing for potential future military operations. Taiwan's coast guard has noted that while these vessels have not yet boarded merchant ships, they have issued radio challenges to create a false impression of jurisdiction. To counter these developments, Taiwan's opposition-controlled legislature approved a plan to spend over $7 billion on unmanned systems to bolster its defense and drone production.
