China's New Energy Vehicle Sales Reach Record Share of Total Market in August

China's new energy vehicle (NEV) sales rose 17.8% year-on-year in August, accounting for a record 60.6% of total new vehicle sales. The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers reported that NEV sales reached 1.643 million units, which was a 5.3% increase from July.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) led the growth, with sales reaching 1.161 million units, a 27.8% year-on-year increase. In contrast, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) sales fell 0.9% year-on-year. Domestic sales of NEVs were down 4.6% year-on-year, but exports continued to grow strongly, rising 130% year-on-year. Overall vehicle production and sales were supported by regional purchase subsidies and automaker promotional campaigns. In the market ranking, battery electric vehicles occupied nine of the ten highest positions in China’s passenger-car sales ranking in August. The Geely EX2 led the overall market with 39,651 vehicles sold. The Tesla Model Y and the Leapmotor A10 also ranked highly in the top three. No gasoline-powered model entered the top 10 best-selling models for the second consecutive month.
