Hui Ka Yan Sentenced to Life in Prison Following Collapse of China's Real Estate Giant

Hui Ka Yan, the founder of China's real estate giant Evergrande, has been sentenced to life in prison by the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court. The court ruled that Hui Ka Yan was guilty of large-scale financial fraud, including inflating assets and concealing liabilities that led to the company's 2021 default. In addition to his life sentence, the court ordered the confiscation of all his personal property, effectively reducing his net worth to zero. More than 50 other individuals, including Hui Ka Yan's sons, Xu Zhijian and Xu Tenghe, received prison terms ranging from 22 months to 18 years. The court also fined Hui Ka Yan's former companies a combined total of $2.4 billion to $3.3 billion. The collapse of Evergrande, which was once China's largest real estate developer, triggered a broader housing market downturn that has seen prices fall by over 20 percent. The court noted that the severe economic losses caused by the company's fraud were particularly egregious, stating that severe punishment was necessary due to the harm caused to society.
