Jorge Emilio Rey reports active forest fires and high-temperature conditions in Cundinamarca

Governor Jorge Emilio Rey reported that six forest fires are currently being attended to in the municipalities of Pacho, Bojacá, Caparrapí, and Albán. Firefighting teams and local residents are working to control the flames, with the fire in Pacho reaching nearly 70% control while efforts continue to contain the fires in Bojacá and Caparrapí. The recent fires have affected approximately 7 hectares of land. These emergencies are occurring during a dry season exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon, which has caused high temperatures and reduced precipitation. In August alone, the department experienced 262 forest fires across 50 municipalities, affecting over 2,100 hectares. For the year 2026, authorities have attended to 760 forest fires across 75 municipalities, affecting a total of approximately 2,765 hectares. To manage the risk, the Cundinamarca Risk Management Unit is monitoring the evolution of each emergency and mobilizing resources as needed. The governor has called for extra prevention measures, including a prohibition on open-controlled burns in 116 municipalities to reduce the risk of new conflagrations.
