While the United States has maintained a fortified presence in the Pacific since the second world war, China's military investments have challenged the existing status quo. Economic issues also dominate the agenda. The Middle East conflict has increased the cost of imported fossil fuels, which account for a80% of the region's energy. Pacific island countries spend a significant portion of the GDP on fuel, often exceeding spending on education and health. Transitioning to renewable energy sources, such as solar and battery storage, is presented as a viable solution to reduce these high costs.
