A climber died after a fatal fall on Castle Peak south of Aspen, Colorado.

A climber died on Sunday after an apparent fall from Castle Peak, a peak reaching 14,272 feet in the Elk Mountains. The Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the fall on the north face of the mountain at 12:41 p.m. and requested assistance from the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office. Mountain Rescue Aspen deployed a team to the upper Montezuma parking lot while a Flight for Life helicopter located the climber from the air. The helicopter returned to Aspen to transport additional rescue personnel to the high-elevation area. Rescuers reached the climber at approximately 3:58 p.m. and determined the individual had sustained injuries that were not survivable. A total of 21 Mountain Rescue Aspen members participated in the operation, using a technical lowering system to evacuate the body from the mountain. The recovery operation was completed and closed by 8:14 p.m. Rescue Leader Coordinator Jeff Edelson stated that Castle Peak is traditionally considered one of the easier peaks in the range. He noted that this was the first fatality on the peak this year and the first he could recall in recent years.
