Abelardo de la Espriella Condemns National Liberation Army Drone Attack That Killed Three Colombian Soldiers

President Abelardo de la Espriella condemned a rebel attack on a military compound in northeastern Colombia that killed at least three soldiers and wounded four others. The National Liberation Army (ELN) launched the strike late Friday in the municipality of Ocaña, in the Norte de Santander department. During the engagement, drones dropped explosives onto the military unit, followed by a clash between the rebels and the troops. Two soldiers died at the site, while a third died after receiving medical attention. President Abelardo de la Espriella stated that for every soldier or police officer killed, the state will bring down the full weight and legitimate force of the nation upon the criminals. The attack occurred in the Catatumbo region, a primary coca-producing area where the ELN and dissident factions of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) compete for control. The administration has intensified military operations against armed groups since taking office. Colombia has also joined the Shield of the Americas, an anti-cartel alliance endorsed by Trump.
