The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Relations requests Russia and Ukraine to stop recruiting Colombian citizens for their armed forces
The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Relations formally requested that the Russian Federation and Ukraine cease the recruitment of Colombian citizens into their respective armed forces. The ministry stated that Colombia does not support, encourage, or authorize the participation of citizens in international armed conflicts. As of September 2026, the ministry has registered 863 requests for consular assistance regarding compatriots in Ukraine and 890 requests regarding the Russian Federation. These requests include cases of citizens who have died and been repatriated, those currently in the process of repatriation, individuals declared missing in combat, and those who have been detained. The ministry has also identified reports of misleading job offers that lure Colombian citizens into joining these conflicts. To address this, the ministry has contacted the General Prosecutor of the Nation 21 times to assist with investigations. Additionally, the ministry is implementing preventive measures, including a protocol at passport offices to identify those intending to travel for military service and a sensitization campaign regarding the risks of associated with international military service.
