A massive fire at the Stadium Flats construction site in South Bend cancelled two major events on September 8.

A massive fire broke out at the Stadium Flats apartment construction site in South Bend, Indiana, just after midnight on September 8. The blaze engulfed the building under construction and a crane, producing a significant amount of embers and debris. The fire occurred at the site of a new community set to host 150 units, including 90 market-rate and 60 low-income units. Fire crews from the South Bend Fire Department arrived to the scene and successfully prevented the flames from spreading to the neighboring Diamond View Apartments and the South Bend Cubs Performance Center. Residents of the Diamond View Apartments were evacuated, and some doors and windows were damaged by the heat and first responders. The fire cancelled the groundbreaking ceremony for Stadium Flats and a ribbon cutting for the Diamond View Apartments. Representatives from the South Bend Cubs confirmed that the ballpark itself sustained no damage, though the performance center's siding and signage were melted. The playoff game scheduled for September 10 remains on schedule. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
