Hugo Aguilar Ortiz marks first year of renovated Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation with 2,600 resolved cases

The renovated Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation celebrated its first year of operation, resolving over 2,600 cases during 163 public sessions. The court's performance was characterized by a shift toward indigenous and Afro-Mexican rights, the settlement of multimillion-dollar tax disputes, and the endorsement of reforms by the administrations of Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. Hugo Aguilar Ortiz, president of the court, described the court's performance as extremely positive. He noted that the court inherited over 1,400 pending cases, some of which had been on file for up to six years, and reduced that number to 56 by the beginning of this month. He also expressed confidence that the official preventive imprisonment case will be resolved this year. The court established new criteria for money laundering, child sexual abuse, and access to water. Significant rulings included recognizing indigenous peoples and Afro-Mexicans as third parties in constitutional controversies and guaranteeing water access in irregular settlements. The court also validated the extinction of 109 federal funds and trust accounts ordered in the year 2020.
