Mexico Celebrates Day of the Grandparents on August 28th to Honor the Wisdom and Contributions of Older Adults

Mexico celebrates the Day of the Grandparents on August 28th, a date dedicated to recognizing the teaching, love, and cultural contributions of older people. While the date was established nationally as the Day of the Elderly in 1998, it has evolved to emphasize the importance of guaranteeing a dignified and active life for the elderly. Experts from the University of Guadalajara, including Dr. Patricia Noemí Vargas Becerra, noted that Mexico will see a majority of elderly people by 2056. Dr. Mario Gerardo Cervantes and Dr. Julio Alberto Dñaz Ramos highlighted the importance of recognizing elderly people as autonomous social actors who can preserve and transmit culture. They also emphasized the need for healthy lifestyles and mental health support to prevent conditions like dementia. The celebration serves as a reminder of the Law of the Rights of Older Adults, which protects the elderly from potential abuses and violence. Local events, such as the festival 'Vivan los Grandes Corazones de Plata' and the Grand Dance of National Day of Our Older Adults, will be held in Mexico City to celebrate the occasion.
