David Murcia Guzmán is transferred to a maximum-security prison in Santander after leading a major Colombian money laundering scandal.
David Murcia Guzmán, the founder of the DMG pyramid scheme, was transferred from La Picota prison in Bogotá to the Palogordo penitentiary in Girón, Santander, on Saturday, August 29. The move places the man responsible for one of Colombia's largest money laundering scandals into a high-security wing of the facility. Murcia Guzmán arrived at the prison around 5:00 p.m. and underwent a reception protocol involving medical, psychological, and treatment evaluations. He is expected to be confined to one of the cells in the most controlled sectors of the establishment. The DMG scheme operated between 2005 and 2008, involving the illegal capture of public funds through prepaid cards and high-return offers. After being extradited to the United States to serve a portion of his sentence, Murcia Guzmán returned to Colombia to serve a cumulative sentence of 22 years, 10 months, and 15 days. His defense team is currently seeking judicial recognition of the time he spent incarcerated in the United States to be counted toward his total Colombian prison term.
