President Abelardo De La Espriella Orders National Review of Colombia's Photo Detection Systems to Address Irregularities
President Abelardo De La Espriella ordered the National Traffic Safety Agency to conduct a national review of the photo detection systems used to issue traffic citations in Colombia. The review was initiated after a preliminary assessment identified approximately 40,000 citation orders that may have been imposed irregularly because authorized devices did not officially register the start of their operation. These findings are currently being validated with SIMIT to determine the necessary legal actions. Additionally, the review identified 12 devices whose authorizations are being revoked due to changes in competition between traffic authorities. In Cartago, a system was denied entry into operation because it failed to meet the established technical requirements. President Abelardo De La Espriella stated that photo detection systems should serve as tools for traffic safety rather than mechanisms for revenue collection. The administration will work with the Ministry of Transport to develop a new regulation for these systems. The government also plans to monitor vehicles that use technological devices to impose citations without the presence of traffic agents to ensure they have the proper authorization.
