Abelardo De La Espriella proposes expanding the Works for Taxes mechanism to reconstruct earthquake-affected regions.

President Abelardo De La Espriella met with regional leaders to discuss reconstruction efforts following a recent earthquake. The National Federation of Departments (FND) presented a series of economic measures to the government to facilitate recovery and attract new investments. These proposals include tax exemptions for donations, tributary discounts for recovery zones, and a zero-IVT tariff for essential reconstruction materials. To support these efforts, the administration announced a plan to expand the 'Works for Taxes' mechanism to all municipalities declared in a state of disaster. This initiative, also proposed by Senator Santiago Barreto Triana, allows companies to allocate up to 50% of their income tax obligations to directly finance reconstruction projects in affected areas. The goal is to mobilize private sector resources to restore infrastructure in sectors such as housing, health, and education. The administration also highlighted the success of humanitarian aid delivered so far, including 40,000 hygiene and food kits, while seeking to ensure that reconstruction projects are prioritized for long-term economic reactivation.
