Federal agencies warn of active cyber threats targeting industrial control systems and water utilities nationwide

Federal agencies, including the NSA and FBI, have issued a warning regarding an active threat targeting Siemens S7 Series programmable logic controllers. These devices are critical for monitoring and controlling industrial equipment across manufacturing, energy, and water sectors. The administration announced that hackers are increasingly using artificial intelligence to simplify the development of tools capable of exploiting these systems. While Siemens reported no new vulnerabilities, the warning comes as water utilities in at least 12 states, including Minnesota and Michigan, have already experienced cyberattacks. In Indiana, local utilities like Citizens Energy Group are implementing security measures to be proactive. Ben Easley, a spokesperson for Citizens Energy, stated that the utility maintains a strict barrier between its business networks and critical controls to ensure safety. Experts suggest that many water systems were not originally designed for modern cyber threats.
