Zohran Mamdani Endorses Delivery Protection Act to Force Amazon to Directly Employ New York City Delivery Drivers

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has endorsed the Delivery Protection Act, a bill that would require logistics companies like Amazon to directly employ all last-mile delivery drivers rather than relying on third-party subcontractors. The legislation, first introduced by Queens council member Tiffany Cabán, seeks to eliminate the subcontractor model that supporters claim underpays workers and shields corporations from accountability. Proponents, including the Teamsters Union and a supermajority of city council members, argue the act will improve worker protections and safety. However, Amazon and a broad business coalition have expressed opposition, warning that the bill could threaten over 10,000 city jobs and increase annual delivery costs for households by $664. Amazon noted that its current model allows for greater flexibility and efficiency. If passed, the administration of Mayor Mamdani may see the company relocate its 10 distribution centers outside the city. The bill is currently pending a City Council vote with strong support from the labor community.
